Hunter Eccleston, Architect

Hunter Eccleston is an Architect at Deicke Richards who works across housing, health, community and education projects with a particular focus on social and affordable housing. He holds a Bachelor of Design (Honours) and a Master of Architecture and has more than 8 years of experience in architectural practice.

In his role, Hunter communicates complex client and stakeholder requirements through clear, rigorous design thinking, translating constraints into resolved, buildable outcomes. He regularly leads and coordinates project teams, balancing design ambition with the practical demands of programme, budget and delivery. His work is grounded in an understanding that architecture operates within real-world systems, and that thoughtful, well-managed processes are as critical as the buildings themselves.

Hunter’s expertise lies in respectful and responsible design, with a strong interest in circular economies and material supply chains. Rather than pursuing sustainability as an abstract ideal, he focuses on tangible decisions that reduce impact, limit unnecessary construction and maximise long-term value for communities. This approach has informed his involvement in developing sustainability action planning within the practice, as well as his work on numerous Department of Housing projects across Queensland.

Career highlights include the ATSICHS Deception Bay Elders Housing project and a range of social housing developments in Rockhampton and Mango Hill, as well as his work in design and fabrication at Five Mile Radius in Brisbane. Hunter was also awarded the DWP Student Prize as the top-performing undergraduate student during his studies.

Motivated by the idea of “being an architect without architecture,” Hunter believes that sometimes the most responsible design response is to build less, prioritising people, resources and outcomes over form. For him, the impact of the work is inseparable from the work itself: delivering housing and infrastructure that genuinely supports those who need it most.
