Housing

Our team is committed to creating new and responsive solutions to housing challenges, using collaborative design that integrates new ideas and engages stakeholders.

Almost three decades ago, we began our practice with a handful of housing projects on our books. Since then, housing in all its forms has been a constant in our practice. Shaped by the social, political and economic influences of each era, our early experience has evolved into a considerable and diverse portfolio of work across the housing continuum.

Housing is core to our practice.

Our team has been involved in social, community, and affordable housing for over 30 years. We have contributed to master planning, design, documentation, policy, research, and advocacy.

Our long history in housing has shaped three distinct strengths that we use to enhance every project: a rare depth of experience; an innate ability to listen; and a clear knowledge of who we are designing for. Now, as our community faces significant challenges with housing availability and affordability, these strengths put us in the ideal place to be a part of the solution.

We are recognised for the development of diverse housing typologies and our team understands the policies and economics that impact this work. Our work includes new models combining social, community and private housing, live / work housing, flexible apartment design, and new explorations of terraces and other forms of attached housing as medium density alternatives.

We understand the processes and protocols of working with government and we know how to manage our program and our deliverables within this context.

Design-led models of affordable housing in Australia are producing new approaches to shared resources and space, sustainability, and community. Influencing market perceptions and expectations, these models offer learnings for innovation in all housing.

We understand flexible design outcomes are sometimes necessary to align with changes in policy and client requirements.

Our team have studied international examples of innovation in affordable housing and we continue to learn from emerging models around the world.

We know architecture has the capacity not just to provide shelter and safety, but to support mental health and wellbeing, heighten awareness of everyday lived experience, and provide a safe, nurturing setting.

Our team ensures expertise gained from outputs such as community and education design are integrated into our housing work.

In master planning and housing projects, we use our consultation and co-design expertise to work with government departments, housing providers, and design and development teams.

Our track record demonstrates a capacity to listen, share and care to interpret and translate.
